About EMDR
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a form of psychotherapy and it was developed in the 1980’s in America by Dr Francine Shapiro. What Does EMDR Involve?
EMDR uses eye movements or other forms of stimulation, such as tapping on the backs of hands, to assist clients in reducing the intensity of their disturbing thoughts and feelings. How Does EMDR Work?
Research has shown that EMDR can directly influence the way the brain works and help to re-establish the mind’s normal way of dealing with emotional distress. After treatment many people find that the memories they have of the trauma they experienced are not as painful as they had been. It is important to note though that EMDR does not make people forget these memories. Simply put, EMDR helps to make traumatic memories less emotional so although a client still has the memories of their trauma they aren’t as strongly linked to an emotional response. This means that clients are less likely to experience episodes of severe anxiety and panic. Is EMDR Medically Recognised?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which is responsible for deciding which drugs and treatments should be available to patients on the NHS, recommends EMDR as a trauma therapy. How Can I Help You?
